Natural hair: cuts and styles

Cuts and protective styles for coily and 4c natural hair, with what to ask your stylist for and how long each one lasts.

These are cuts and styles for natural coily hair, from 4a to 4c. The cuts are made on dry hair, following the coil pattern, so each coil sits where it will be worn: a short afro of two to three centimetres all over, a tapered cut that keeps the coils on top and takes the sides gradually shorter, and a rounded afro of about ten centimetres shaped into an even circle.

The protective styles keep the hair stretched and covered while it grows. Two-strand twists use your own hair and last two to four weeks; knotless box braids add extension hair and last six to eight weeks. A high puff is the everyday option, gathered at the crown in a few minutes. For every style, ask for no tension at the edges.
